The short answer? It's no.
Without wanting to spoil the surprise , we sold ovens to BBQ owners and they ALL agree: the pizza oven gives better results!
Several kingpins of the grill swear by their Kamado. We understand. It's a miracle on four legs. We also love infusing our food with smoke . But when it comes to cooking a Neapolitan-style pizza , we're not there.
We can agree that a barbecue *can* cost around 700F, but it takes a lot of muscle, the cooking lasts several minutes and as for the hydration of the dough… let’s just say it’s more dry than light and crispy.
We're not saying you won't get satisfactory results. We're being more nuanced, though.
But you won't get anything comparable to the aromatic pizzas worthy of the crowded pizzerias of Naples.
But why 😱?
Several factors favor the pizza oven (versus the BBQ).
- The heat 🥵
- Preheating time ⌚️
- The oven design 🔥
Outdoor pizza ovens are specifically designed to quickly reach (and maintain) much higher temperatures than a conventional BBQ ( up to 1000F in less than 20 min. )! And that, for hours without too much effort.
The insulation is excellent. The baking stones (refractory or cordierite) retain the heat. The unique dome shape of the pizza ovens ensures optimal airflow for even heat distribution.
With a pizza oven, your pizzas cook in 60-90 seconds for a "perfectly" crispy crust, just like in a wood-fired oven in a real pizzeria!
But a pizza oven is expensive just for baking pizza.
We agree. Taking the pizza oven out once a year for guests is expensive to run. But did you know…
You don't have to just bake pizza in it...although once you taste it, you'll want to cook it several times a week!
Just like a BBQ, a pizza oven allows you to use its heat to cook different foods such as meats, fish, vegetables, and seafood.
In fact, you should see our friend Mathieu cooking. He explained to us just yesterday that with one of his Ooni cast iron skillets , he was able to satisfy his craving for Tomahawk steak, grilled right in his pizza oven. Paradise exists.
You already have a BBQ, what's the point of duplicating the equipment?
For the pizza lover, it 's practically an essential addition. You can choose your preferred fuel to complement your existing equipment (wood, pellets, propane). And you can cook not only Diavola, Mozzarella di Bufala, and Frutti di Mare pizzas, but also Gnocchi alla Sorrentina , homemade naan bread, and apple turnovers.
Brief.
The pizza oven is for those looking for state-of-the-art equipment that delivers the best results quickly and easily.
Have you ever felt a sense of pride while cooking? It's so enjoyable, and you can easily recapture that feeling when cooking with a pizza oven.
But let's say... you decide not to buy a pizza oven right now. And you choose to cook with your BBQ instead. Here's what might happen. You'll probably make some decent pizzas (with a lot of mess). But you'll have to say goodbye to the traditional Neapolitan pizza cooked at 900°F in 60-90 seconds. The BBQ simply isn't designed for that, even if you push it to the limit.
On the contrary… if it’s unthinkable for you to be so limited, and you’re already imagining yourself breathing in the natural aromas of your Margherita pizza… Perhaps you’d like to know which pizza oven is right for you?
Good news!
