Gozney Arc XL vs Ooni Koda 16: which to choose in 2026?

Our honest opinion, from Quebec, Canada.

At Lapizzashop, we sell both. We’ve used both of them at home. And we're telling you exactly what we think of them, because our job isn't to sell you a particular oven; our job is to help you choose the right one.

Two ovens, two brands, two philosophies

The Arc XL and the Koda 16 are a bit like choosing between an Porsche and a Subaru. Both will get you to your destination, but the driving experience is completely different.

The Gozney Arc XL is the oven you pull out and admire even before you light it. The finish is meticulous, the design is sleek; it has that little something that makes you set up your outdoor kitchen around it, not just next to it. The Ooni Koda 16, on the other hand, is the oven that impresses you from the first bite. Efficient, and more portable. It heats up quickly, is less forgiving, and delivers results that end all discussions.

Performance: 500°C for both, but not in the same way

Both ovens reach 500°C (950°F). That's where the resemblance starts to end.

The Koda 16 achieves this in about 20 minutes thanks to its L-shaped burner that envelops the cooking chamber. A Neapolitan pizza in 60 seconds is possible. The heat comes mainly from the back and top, which gives a nice quick browning, but requires a bit of attention to turn the pizza at the right moment.

The Arc XL uses a lateral flame that spreads from one side of the oven to the other. The result: fewer hot spots in the back, more enveloping and uniform heat. You turn it less, monitor it less, and manage several batches in a row better. This is particularly appreciated when cooking for a whole table on a Friday night.

Size: 16 inches in both cases, but not the same space

On paper, both bake pizzas up to 16 inches. In practice, the interior of the Arc XL is designed so that you truly have room to maneuver, turn a peel, make pizzas one after another, or place a cast iron skillet between batches. The Koda 16 is a bit more compact on the outside, making it easier to transport, but the interior space is a bit tighter to work in.

Ease of use: Advantage Arc XL

The Arc XL comes with an integrated digital thermometer. The temperature is visible in real time, without any additional tools. The side flame is also visible from the outside, so you know exactly how the cooking is progressing just by looking.

The Koda 16 is very intuitive to start and use, but you will probably need to invest in a separate infrared thermometer to properly manage the stone temperature. This isn't a defect; it's just one more tool to consider.

Price: a gap worth considering

The difference is real, but it makes sense when you look at what each oven truly represents.

The Koda 16 is an oven designed for making pizzas, and it does it very well. The Arc XL, on the other hand, is designed for a complete outdoor kitchen. Its precise lateral flame, its spacious chamber that accommodates both hydrated dough and a cast iron skillet, its integrated thermometer, its robust construction made to stay in place season after season... all of this is what you pay extra for. We're not comparing two pizza ovens; we're comparing two different ways of approaching outdoor cooking. For someone who wants to be mobile and perform quickly at a good price, the Koda 16 is the logical choice. For someone who is investing in a setup that will evolve with them, the Arc XL is a different conversation.

Who it's really for

The Ooni Koda 16 is for someone who wants to be mobile, who is just starting out, or who has a tighter budget. It's an oven that doesn't require much thought: you light it, you make pizzas, you're happy. Its portability and price make it the obvious choice for those who don't yet know how often they'll be cooking outdoors.

The Gozney Arc XL is for someone who already knows that pizza will become a habit. Someone who entertains often, who wants a setup that stays in place, and who appreciates having control over their cooking without having to chase down the right tools. It's an investment designed to last, with an experience that improves over time.

Our verdict

If we had to choose just one oven for someone starting out with a limited budget, the Ooni Koda 16 is a safe bet.

If we had to choose for someone who knows they'll be making pizza often, wants it to last, and wants a more refined cooking experience, the Gozney Arc XL is our recommendation without hesitation.

Both deserve their place in your backyard. The only bad decision is to keep ordering delivery.
